This section will give you small descriptions and manuals about useable things we have done and learned at sustainable projects we have visited. In order to help and inspire you to build and develop them by yourself.
How to build a Humus toilet
To build a humus toilet you need basically enough wood for the shelter, some tools to bring everything together, screws and of course a suitable place for the toilet. It is important that you use shavings from wood and natural resources which can get decomposed. These material is then getting huminified and can be used as natural fertilizer for your crop field or vegetables. You can seperate urin and droppings from each other, therefore prepare a bowl with a seperating thin aluminium wall in the middle. The steel/plastic bowl, you can easily take a old bowl for washing clothes for example, should have two openings on the bottom to let the urin and feces fall through to a big container. For the openings take a big bottle, draw a circle and cut them out with a saw or a pocketknife. The urin in the container can also be used as phosphor fertilizer for crops and vegetables, but take care with hormons for example womans who are using the pill shouldn´t use a humus toilet! Don´t forget a bucket insight the toilet for shavings which can be thrown in the container afterwards to avoid bad smells. All material which you need for building the toilet can be easily find second hand of course except the screws but also needed tools can be loan by friends. Finally if you want to make your toilet puplic accessible don´t forget to implement a ramp to make it barrier free for those who using a wheelchair.
How to build a raised bed?
A raised bed can have big advantages in your garden and is not that difficult to biuld. First of all you should ask yourself if you need to have a raised bed. For example if your plants already have the right angle to the sun and you produce enough healthy good tasted food you should ask yourself if it is neccesary to have a raised bed. Furthermore it is not in a way of permaculture thinking to build up something which is not really neccesary or which needs lots of external resources which are not allready in the garden to be build up. For example if you go to get wood from the baumarkt or the forest or other things like that which are not allready in your garden and not be used it wouldn´t be the wright way in permacultural thinking. To build up a raised bed it is important to have a solid soil, and enough space for placing the dead woods. The first level is made with woods, hopefully placed somewhere in advance to not destroying the habitat of thousands of insecst by displacing them. After having a strong wooden fundament with big dead big woods you will start to fill the open spaces/ pores with smaller woods, may take dropped down from trees. The next step is to put a layer of dropped leaves and other green organic leftovers on top of those woods. Then you maybe cut the lawn and take those leftovers like mulch on top. Afterwards cover the bed with some compost material and the earth you allready have digged out to make the ground even. Finally wait for a while, plant your vegetables and you will see it will grow better due to more nutrients and more sunlight for photosynthesis. How to order and when to plant which plant is a different story.
